Things I Saw 4

Things I saw:

An old woman at a bus stop, politely pointing out that there’s a bumblebee perched on my finger.

A crow grabbing food from a street cat.

A man walking three big dogs, annoyed by a forklift backing down a steep, narrow, cobbled lane.

A grumpy looking woman helping another woman (her mother?) who got stuck climbing over the turnstile at a public toilet.

Cops with coifs.

A dead seal on the side of the road that turned out, on closer inspection, to be a fat, sleeping street dog.

A dog on a long chain being taunted by a crow.

Things I Saw 3

Things I saw:

A cat stalking a crow in the forecourt of a mosque.

Small boys ecstatically waving plastic daggers at a passing fighter jet.

All the cats in the street hanging out at the cobbler’s shop, watching him work.

A crow hiding a crust of bread next to a footpath.

Facist graffiti.

Red poppies in the long grass next to the freeway.

A colour drawing of a blank eyed person looking out of an eye. The eye is surrounded by decorative swirls. There's a small paintbrush next to the drawing.

Things I Saw 2

Things I saw:

A man next to the road, slicing open a mattress as if he’s filleting a fish.

A street dog dreaming about barking.

A derelict hotel with peeling walls and an empty swimming pool, and a row of newly washed carpets hung to dry on a railing.

A school of fish so small I could hardly see them.

Two crows raiding a dumpster before sunrise.

A goose eyeing me carefully, checking whether I’m safe to approach.

Two huge dogs, one black and one brindle brown, deeply asleep in the shade in front of some post boxes at the side of a road. They are lying facing away from one another but they look very companionable.

Things I Saw 1

Things I saw:

A crow eating a pistachio in the forecourt of the Blue Mosque.

An old man, hands full of red peppers, looking wistfully at some discarded irrigation pipes.

A big plastic bottle full of live leeches.

A worrying plume of smoke that turned out to be a cloud.

A group of women in black niqabs sitting on the side of a ferry boat, feet swinging over the water.

A small bucket full of live fish being hoisted, suddenly, out of sight to the bridge above me.

"MetaFilter turns 25 this month, a shining beacon of the Good Web. Reluctant owner Jessamyn West tells us how rusty tech and vibrant community keeps it vital."

MeFi's b'day is Sunday. I haven't been there all that time but I have been lately. Here's a podcast talking about some of the challenges of moderating a very different web than the one we had in '99

Of particular note is the auto-generated transcript which misses words like Gopher, NNTP and Usenet :lolsob:

Metafilter contains the seeds for everything from Twitter to Reddit to comments sections on blogs, and it’s older than podcasts, the blog boom, Facebook, and well, basically everything online. Owner Jessamyn West sat down for a deep conversation with Mike about how MetaFilter’s reliance on community-focusd governance and person-scale moderation has helped it achieve its […]

I thought I was done writing about street cats, but last night this young mother cat came into the garden and placed her five kittens inside a vertical pipe.

My brother in law was worried that they wouldn't be able to get out again so he removed them from the pipe and provided an alternative shelter (the crate in the background.)

The neighbours around here have an informal system of looking after the cats, giving them food and veterinary care. But some people are resistant to the idea of neutering the animals.

With some subterfuge and diplomacy these cats might be lucky enough to get neutered. I do hope so.

Saying goodbye to PJ, my favourite Istanbul street cat. (We're leaving tomorrow)

I need to pack my stuff but he's fallen asleep in my lap.

I’m used to the dogs kinda sneakily walking into my office and bumping my legs, it doesn’t startle me at all.

But Cal here has started padding quietly in and standing on his back feet to reach up with one paw and tap me lightly on the shoulder, so that I think a silent human is looming over my chair, and then I jump two feet in the air followed a fraction of a second later by Cal jumping two feet in the air.

He’s also started holding my hands. Literally. Just holding them.
