I’ve just finished reading “Zoo City” by Lauren Beukes. I really enjoyed it, and did some drawings of the characters. Here is Zinzi December and her Sloth:
I like her a lot. She’s a tough girl.
I want to draw her lover, Benoît, but I dont have a clear idea what he looks like yet.

She looks strong and daring. I love her eyes.
Never heard of this book, I’m wondering what the story is about.
By the way, just want to tell you I have a separate blog written in English.

The story is fascinating. It is set in Johannesburg slightly in the future, at a time when a mysterious event has happened which causes anyone who has committed a serious crime such as murder, to “get an animal”. Literally. An animal appears, and they must keep it close to them, carry it about with them everywhere they go. They cannot separate from it, it causes them great physical and spiritual anguish to be away from their animal. If anything happens to the animal, they get taken by “the undertow” – a strange, dark force. The girl in the picture has a sloth as her animal.
I loved this book, although it is quite disturbing.
