Zinzi and Sloth – Zoo City

I’ve just finished reading “Zoo City” by Lauren Beukes.  I really enjoyed it, and did some drawings of the characters.  Here is Zinzi December  and her Sloth:

I like her a lot.  She’s a tough girl.

I want to draw her lover, Benoît, but I dont have a clear idea what he looks like yet.

Carpet of flowers

The Rondebosch Common is  covered in a carpet of flowers.  It is still winter according to the calendar, but the Common begs to differ!

Ink Garden

Another automatic pen and ink drawing.  Unplanned. Pure doodle, in fact.

Close up and Worrying

I’m trying out my new scanner.  The old one produces blurry images, and I’m thinking of doing digital prints of my drawings.   Here are some details of my drawings produced by scanning them at quite high resolutions.  Keep in mind that these drawings were done with a very, very fine point pen indeed:

I’m in a bit of a worry loop about the new scanner.  It is better than the old one in some ways, but not perfect.  If the artwork is not absolutely flat against the scan glass, it comes out looking out of focus.   I’m not earning any money right at the moment, so spending any on a piece of equipment like this makes me very anxious.  I need to decide if I should take it back.  But will find a better one, and can I afford it in any case?

As a completely rational reaction to worrying about money, I spent the whole day reading a Dick Francis novel.  Oh well.  Tomorrow will be a better day.

Wasteground Circus by Charles Keeping

Here is a Charles Keeping book that I’ve never heard of before – “Wasteground Circus”.

It is about two boys, Scott and Wayne, who like to play in an abandoned wasteground.  One day, they see a circus setting up in the wasteground:

These images are details  cropped out of larger images.  Here you can see the boys buying tickets from a marvelous tattooed circus man: More

Automatic Ink

After several failed attempts to do another “Bluebeard” drawing, I disconnected my brain from my hand, and this is what appeared on the page:

I must confess that I was listening to an audiobook of Frank Herbert’s “Dune” while I was drawing, so some blue on blue eyes appeared.

Bluebeard’s Mirror

It was only when I’d  finished this drawing, that I understood what it was about – the story of Bluebeard, of course:

This was quite unplanned!  I tried to do another drawing about Bluebeard, and failed.  It seems I am in complete random drawing mode at the moment, no planning possible.

Mirror Tantrum

Another ink-bomb drawing.  This time I started by blowing the ink around the page, and then added random lines.  Pretty soon I had a broken mirror, hair, eyes, teeth, and the tantrum was inevitable:

Ink Dreaming

A pen and ink drawing done a week or so ago:

This was an attempt to recapture the way I drew when I was little.  I used to make myself quite dizzy blowing bits of ink around a page.

Work in Progress: Mevrou Karwats and Antjie Donder

Luckily the light was good again today, and I was able to take some more photos of my newly completed pieces.  As you can see, each puppet is installed in a large glass jar.  This is Mevrou Karwats:

And here is Antjie Donder:

Work in progress: Almost There

All five of my sculptures are finished, and today I took some photographs of them so that I could start finding a gallery to exhibit them.   Here are two:

Dangerous Footsteps

Yesterday’s post reminded me of this sign.  I saw it every morning on my way to work (when I still had a way to work ).

I particularly like the “whilst”.

Brocade Barcode?

I noticed this outside Wynberg Library recently.  I wonder if they meant “barcode” migration?

Work in progress – the bases are done (almost)

Today I finished the stands for my puppets.   Each puppet is held up by a (hidden) velcro belt attached to a  transparent acrylic rod fixed to a wooden base.  The bases fit into the bottom of large glass jars.

The wooden bases wont be visible  – each will be covered with an appropriate surface for the  puppet attached.

For example, Mevrou Karwats – the woman with the green shoes on the left of the image – will be standing on a section of ornate carpet.  And the little school girl on the right will be standing on a mixture of white gravel and sea shells.

I’m very pleased with these.  They are a vast improvement on my previous attempts which were made of wire and were very visible and distracting.
