Another automatic pen and ink drawing. Unplanned. Pure doodle, in fact.

Close up and Worrying
11 Aug 2010 4 Comments
I’m trying out my new scanner. The old one produces blurry images, and I’m thinking of doing digital prints of my drawings. Here are some details of my drawings produced by scanning them at quite high resolutions. Keep in mind that these drawings were done with a very, very fine point pen indeed:

I’m in a bit of a worry loop about the new scanner. It is better than the old one in some ways, but not perfect. If the artwork is not absolutely flat against the scan glass, it comes out looking out of focus. I’m not earning any money right at the moment, so spending any on a piece of equipment like this makes me very anxious. I need to decide if I should take it back. But will find a better one, and can I afford it in any case?

As a completely rational reaction to worrying about money, I spent the whole day reading a Dick Francis novel. Oh well. Tomorrow will be a better day.

After several failed attempts to do another “Bluebeard” drawing, I disconnected my brain from my hand, and this is what appeared on the page:

I must confess that I was listening to an audiobook of Frank Herbert’s “Dune” while I was drawing, so some blue on blue eyes appeared.
Bluebeard’s Mirror

It was only when I’d finished this drawing, that I understood what it was about – the story of Bluebeard, of course:

This was quite unplanned! I tried to do another drawing about Bluebeard, and failed. It seems I am in complete random drawing mode at the moment, no planning possible.
Mirror Tantrum

Another ink-bomb drawing. This time I started by blowing the ink around the page, and then added random lines. Pretty soon I had a broken mirror, hair, eyes, teeth, and the tantrum was inevitable:

A pen and ink drawing done a week or so ago:

This was an attempt to recapture the way I drew when I was little. I used to make myself quite dizzy blowing bits of ink around a page.
A Knight in a Skirt meets Dragon Fishbreath

This was another one of those drawings I found while sorting my tax and medical aid documents. A knight in a skirt, and a friendly dragon with fishy breath.
The Collector

I tried drawing with a dip pen and ink again for the first time in years. Used to be my favourite medium. I seem to have developed a fascination with “wicked women holding helpless victim”.
The Collector:

I wonder about the story. Is the person on her shoulder a rescuer, or an accomplice? What is with the old fashioned ladies in the painting? Are the people in the bottles tiny, or is she a giantess? And how did she lose her eye?

I had fun colouring in my “what the gardener found” drawing in Photoshop:

Found Drawings: What the Gardener Found

I spent the day sorting papers into box files. Among the IRP5 forms, tax returns and correspondence about medical aid, I found a quite a few drawings. One particular book was filled years ago: I remember, I was in the middle of my masters, and was desperate for some kind of creative outlet to get away from XSLT and AJAX.
This one which could be from a story called “What the Gardener found”

I love her expression, her dainty watch, and the spray can clutched at the ready:

And notice her well stocked shelf of poisons:

I’ll post more of these “found drawings” over the next couple of days. And maybe I’ll have fun colouring in the digital versions? Sigh. I intend to raise procrastination to a new level, to counteract the effect of all those files.
Digital Pattern Drawing

Another drawing done in Flash, with the patterns added in Photoshop. I like drawing random faces when I’m just testing a medium. This one seems like she might have an interesting story to tell.

The Incredible Uncertainty of Digital Drawing

I’ve been drawing on my computer for the first time in ages. My wacom tablet’s been looking at me so accusingly so I just had to try again. I did a drawing in Flash, just a random face to get back into practice.

Drawing on a computer is very different from anything else. I find the ability to undo useful, obviously, but it can also be paralysing. “Was that stroke right? Maybe not (undo) and that one? (undo) maybe this one? (undo)”
With pen and paper you just have to make your mistakes work for you. But I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Want to try something with patterns, next.
Winter’s Day Drawing

A rainy, wintery Monday spent drawing while listening to “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” audiobook. I start working again tomorrow. Today, I could forget about it for a while.

Drawing Swop with Josephine

Earlier this year, I got a charming e-mail from Josephine Ferorelli, with a link to her website and a request to do a drawing swop. ( Yes… I know. This is a post I should have written months ago.)
We mailed one another some examples of our work, and after some picking and choosing I sent this drawing:

and got this one in return – “Plants with pants”:

I love it – so cool and quirky.
Josephine also included this amazing postcard with an image by Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo:

Thanks Josephine! And sorry it took me so long to write about it. Everyone else – go check out Josephine’s gallery. I particularly like her “solar powered” drawings which (I think) are made by exposing coloured paper to the sun through stencils and cut outs, to achieve a sort of “shadow” drawing.
